Hot Investor Trends — Ep. 1: Finding Asymmetric Upside: How Smart Investors Pick the Right Founders
In this episode, an experienced angel investor explains how she evaluates founders, the value of firsthand problem knowledge, and why the best investments balance limited downside with exponential upside.
Learn her million-dollar lesson: success comes from focusing on asymmetry, people, and time.
Welcome to the Hot Investor Trends series, recorded live at a family office club
event. In this first episode, you'll hear how active investors find opportunities with
limited downside and massive upside potential. Let's dive in. So can we do this?
One more big round of applause here for our panel number three. We have hot
investor trends. All right. So why we do this? Once again, in front of you guys,
we have a timer that's right there. Each of you will have five minutes, but you're
going to go not just down the line. So we're going to skip around a little bit,
but you guys are going to have five minutes. And once again, we want to know your
name and what kind of firm you're with in case it might be different. Two, we want
to know what you typically invest in. Is it AI? Is it tech? Are you in bio
pharma? I mean, let us know that. Preferred investment structures. What kind of
things do you work with or that you structure your deals with? Also, what's the
number one type of investments that you're looking to source. So from people here in
the room or what are you looking to fill out your portfolio with? And then the
last one, what's your number one most valuable million dollar insight, okay? So a
few different ones to work with, but why don't we do this? Can we actually start?
Connie, why don't we start there with you? I know, thank you for being a part of
this. I know, there you go. Got to keep you on your toes. All the mics are power
locked on. So you can't even turn even turn them off.
Everyone give Connie a little rap, applause. She starts us off here. And Connie,
whatever you're ready. That's really not fair. I really did set here. But anyway, I
can be first. We are a network of the angel investors, family offices. We have
investment funds. And we also,
investing companies individually. We also have a fund in Northern California. So if
companies come through our network and they get additional funds from the investors,
then they can apply for the fund. We typically invest, about 50 % of our investments
have been in life sciences. We're trying to get away from that, and we're trying to
look at other opportunities. So I'll share a couple of them that we're looking at
right now. I prefer private equity. Straight private equity.
We'll do convertible notes, safes or best for the entrepreneur, not always great for
the investor. Thank you.
tremendous difference. And we have Kenny in the room. Kenny, would you stand up? I
just met Kenny today. He has a company called Skellaware, and I had the pleasure of
having lunch, setting across from him today, and he was talking about the pains from
playing football. And he has a solution. So these are the type of entrepreneurs that
we are looking for, that I'm looking for. So thank you so much for sharing your
opportunity with me today. We're also looking at today I actually looked at a
company unmanned
a disruptive innovation do I still have two minutes left you do come my god okay
I'm gonna slow down but anyway they actually removed rivets from aircraft so they
have had a tremendously hard time trying to get past regulation and get that adopted
by the airline industry because all the rib All the little dots that you see on
the airplanes, when they have to do MRO, they have to take those airplanes apart,
and they have to remove each one. They use a big drill now. Well, we have an
electrostatic gun that I can remove the rivet in six seconds. That's another company,
and we're hoping that they exit pretty quick. So now I'll say my most important
thing? Yeah. Okay, I got time, you know. Okay, we invest where the downside is
limited. The upside is exponential, and the people are exceptional.
anything. So you can have a great team. You can have a great team with a mediocre
product and they can be very successful. Or you can have a product. I invested in
a company two or three years ago that they were on the market. They had a
technology. They had a device. It worked. I tried it myself. But the team just
couldn't make it. They just couldn't make it work. And so I ended up losing my
money. They're still in business. I don't get to write anything off. So if you
invest This is where you're risking.

up, we dive into real estate strategies, still creating wealth in today's market.
