Welcome to the Family Office podcast. In this episode recorded live at our Beverly
Hills Investor Club Summit, we uncover why family offices and fund managers are
moving to Puerto Rico. Let's get into it. With Puerto Rico in particular,
I remember there was a trend, say, 15 years ago where all these hedge fund managers
and people were moving there for tax advantage. What does that look like today,
or if you don't mind, being completely ignorant of it, just from? Yes, certainly.
And I don't give official advice, please consult your tax advisor and attorney.
However,
there are a lot of benefits under what they call Act 60, which was the revamp of
Act 20 and Act 22, which is part of the Puerto Rican tax code. Puerto Rico is a
U .S. territory, in case any of you in the room are not familiar, it has a very
special tax regime. All U .S. territories do, but Puerto Rico has one that's the
best, in my opinion, in that regard, because it's entirely independent of the IRS
and the IRS Code.
As far as the trendiness, I like to be on the cutting edge or ahead of the pack
a little bit. So I did this a few years ago and now I meet so many people like,
oh, I'm considering that again. So I'm like, yes, I'm doing what I should be. But
Puerto Rico had some setbacks based on Hurricane Maria, COVID,
et cetera. So it seems like every time they gain in popularity and momentum with
respect to this program, there's some sort of setback attention is elsewhere but it's
a wonderful program it's really the one of the few places in the world you can
live as a u .s. citizen and not be taxed on your worldwide income not be taxed on
capital gains and certain other types of portfolio income of course depending on
where it's sourced so that's a that's a quicky uh breakdown on Puerto Rico but very
advantageous and it's a beautiful place with friendly people and quick flights
anywhere in the eastern seaboard. Stay tuned to our next discussion.
We'll dive into the world of green energy exploring how investors are structuring
deals, managing legal risks, and finding strong returns in the transition to a
sustainable economy.
