Serge is a tech entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist who has founded dozens of IT and technology companies, venture capital funds, and science education centers.

Born into a family of physicists, Serge moved to Singapore in 1993, where he became a citizen. Over the last 25 years, he has emerged as a prominent entrepreneur in the Singapore region and globally in the field of technology. He holds a BS in Physics, a Master’s in Physics and Electrical Engineering, and a PhD in Computer Science.

Serg Bell: I’m very glad to be here. I’m happy to answer questions in such a prestigious place like Billionaires.com.

The Turning Point in Business

Richard C. Wilson: Let’s get right into it. What was the major turning point or strategic choke point that propelled your success? Was there a specific moment or acquisition that made everything accelerate?

Serg Bell: I usually don’t think about business in terms of a single defining moment. Business isn’t like gambling, where you make one right bet and win big. It’s more like poker or bridge—a long game where success comes from making numerous strategic decisions over time.

I’ve been in business for 33 years, involved in multiple companies, each with different contexts and circumstances. There isn’t just one event that changed everything. Instead, most business opportunities arise from external factors—geopolitical shifts, economic trends, advancements in technology, and scientific breakthroughs. The key is to recognize and capitalize on these external changes.

A Strategy Worth More Than $1 Million

Richard C. Wilson: What’s the most valuable strategy—worth more than a million dollars—that you wish someone had shared with you earlier in your career?

Serg Bell: If I had to pick one, it would be the importance of understanding contracts, legal documents, and corporate agreements. Every businessperson deals with multi-party contracts—employment agreements, shareholder agreements, service level agreements, stock purchase agreements, and more.

These contracts are rarely enforced directly; they are more often enforced psychologically. However, many entrepreneurs don’t dedicate enough time or effort to understanding them. We live in a time where generating contracts is easy, and we are surrounded by thousands of agreements.

The best advice I can give is to have great legal advisors and to read and fully understand your agreements. This is becoming even more important with the rise of Generative AI, which allows us to automate legal and compliance processes more efficiently.

The Role of AI in Legal Processes

Richard C. Wilson: I want to dive deeper into Aracor AI. Can you explain what it does and how it supports legal teams?

Serg Bell: We started Aracor AI several years ago with the idea that AI—now often referred to as Generative AI—could be used to automate the intelligent processing of legal texts. It helps in checking contracts for patterns, logical structures, and potential risks.

Aracor AI allows lawyers to focus on critical matters while automating mechanical and repetitive tasks, such as document markup, due diligence, legal corrections, and simulations of possible outcomes. AI can handle these tasks efficiently while still ensuring that legal experts remain in control of decision-making.

When working with AI in legal settings, privacy, security, compliance, and collaboration are crucial considerations. Most legal processes involve multiple stakeholders, often 50 or more in large transactions. AI enhances efficiency in these collaborative environments, and that’s the core of what Aracor AI does—it helps legal professionals be more effective.

The Costliest Mistake Investors and Founders Make

Richard C. Wilson: What is the number one most costly mistake that you have seen investors or founders make, and how can it be avoided?

Serg Bell: The most common and costly mistake I’ve seen is the failure to conduct sufficient due diligence. We live in a world of generalizations—universal leadership traits, business trends, cultural values—but in reality, everything is context-specific.

As an investor and entrepreneur, you are constantly choosing people—executives, business partners, investors, and board members. The biggest mistakes come from selecting the wrong individuals.

Leaders are not universal. Some are better in high-change environments, while others excel in periods of stability. The key is to perform thorough due diligence on people, documents, and business partners to ensure they fit the specific context of your venture.
